Disney announced its latest plans on the Disney Parks Blog on Friday. The Monsters, Inc.-themed area was first announced during the D23 fan event over the summer.
When the new Monsters Inc. land opens, it will be home to a suspended ride that recreates the 2001 film’s iconic door vault scene. It will also be home to dining, shopping and a new theater show.
Its location will necessitate the closure of Muppet Vision 3D, a film that opened in 1991 and incorporates real set pieces and actors.
"As we move forward with these changes, we are having creative conversations and exploring ways to preserve the film and other parts of the experience for fans to enjoy in the future," Disney said.
Though the film is closing, the Muppets will be relocated to Sunset Boulevard in the park. There, Rock 'n' Roller Coaster will be rethemed, making it the first Disney ride featuring the Muppets.
Rock 'n' Roller Coaster opened in 1999 as Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith, which it remains today. Guests are invited to an Aerosmith concert by lead singer Steven Tyler and have a wild ride on the way.
Disney said more details on the projects will be released next year.
