This year, Mexico's luxury hotel scene received a massive nod of approval from the globally revered Michelin Guide. Michelin Keys, which denote excellence in hospitality and service, were recently awarded to several standout hotels in the country, continuing to cement its position as a destination for luxury travelers.
While most travelers are familiar with the Michelin Guide's famed restaurant stars, the Michelin Key is a more recent venture, awarding hotels for their commitment to excellence in service, design and guest experience. The accolade recognizes properties that offer something beyond the ordinary, whether that's through architecture, personalized service or a location that blends the hotel into its surroundings. This year, Mexico has a handful of properties that have earned this coveted distinction.
Among the 2024 Michelin Key honorees are some of Mexico's most visually stunning and uniquely luxurious properties. These hotels aren't just about five-star ratings — they encapsulate the magic of Mexico itself. Here are a few of the hotels that Michelin has deemed worthy of this recognition:
Chable Yucatan (Two Keys)
Tucked in the jungles of the Yucatan Peninsula, the Chable Yucatan was one of the first Mexican hotels to earn a Michelin Key. The sprawling wellness resort is built around a 19th-century hacienda and offers guests private casitas surrounded by lush vegetation. Michelin recognized the resort for its blend of contemporary design and traditional Mayan architecture, as well as its commitment to sustainability. With a world-class spa centered around a cenote and an emphasis on Mayan wellness practices, the Chable Yucatan offers guests a connection to nature and culture.
One&Only Mandarina (Three Keys)
On the Pacific coast of Mexico, the One&Only Mandarina on the Riviera Nayarit is a luxurious retreat that feels set away from everyday life. Perched along cliffs within the rainforest and overlooking the ocean, the resort's dramatic setting was a key factor in Michelin's decision to award it a Key. Each of the treehouse-style villas is designed to maximize privacy and views. The Michelin Guide also noted the resort's commitment to preserving the natural surroundings as well as the its gourmet dining, world-class spa and immersive experiences in the surrounding jungle.
Casa de Sierra Nevada, A Belmond Hotel (Two Keys)
San Miguel de Allende's Casa de Sierra Nevada, A Belmond Hotel is a collection of beautifully restored 16th- to 18th-century colonial mansions. Each room and suite is full of character, showcasing traditional Mexican decor, hand-painted tiles, wood-beamed ceilings and courtyards. The hotel's gardens, outdoor pools and world-class spa create a sanctuary experience within the historic heart of the city. Meanwhile, its award-winning restaurant, Andanza, serves haute Mexican cuisine.
Hotel Esencia (Three Keys)
Located on the white sandy beaches of the Riviera Maya, Hotel Esencia is a luxurious escape for travelers seeking relaxation. Once the private home of an Italian duchess, this boutique hotel has been transformed into an intimate sanctuary of understated elegance. Michelin's inspectors highlighted the hotel's service, noting how every guest is treated like royalty. The minimalist design, paired with tropical gardens and views of the Caribbean Sea, make it a standout property.
