You may recognize my byline from Mexico stories I've written for Travel Weekly, which I've been busy doing for the past eight years. Or maybe you're subscribed to the Mexico e-newsletter and have caught some my insights, news stories and features there.

Recently, Travel Weekly has extended me the wonderful opportunity to start adding Caribbean island stamps to my passport, and I couldn't be more thrilled.

During my years as Travel Weekly's Mexico editor (and 15 years overall writing about the country), I've gained a special appreciation for destinations with layers. Mexico taught me that every place has its rhythms, its rituals, its secrets waiting to be shared. So when the chance to cover the Caribbean came along, I thought: let's do it. The Caribbean is as complex as it is captivating: a constellation of more than 7,000 islands, each with its own twist on paradise. And honestly, who wouldn't want to get to know them all?

It's a complex destination

Here's what I love most about this new journey is that there's something innately diverse and deeply magnetic about the Caribbean. Every island is its own world, with a unique story to tell, whether it's the French-infused flavors of Martinique or the reggae-fueled pulse of Jamaica. My passion comes from going a step further beyond what you think you know and seeing just how much more you can learn. From Dominica to Saba, Statia to Tobago, there are dozens of islands that may be harder to get to but worth the extra effort.

As is the case with my Mexico duties (which I will continue, as well), I also want to find out what you want to know as travel advisors -- whether it's posting up on pristine beaches, diving into local festivals or finding that one perfect dish that will seal the deal on a vacation for your clients.

• Insight: Making island-hopping a real option in the Caribbean

Of course, there's more to paradise than meets the eye. The Caribbean has long been a top destination for travelers, but that popularity has its challenges. There's a delicate dance between enjoying the region and preserving its natural beauty, honoring local communities and supporting sustainable travel. And, as you may know if you've read my reports on Mexico, these are issues near and dear to my heart. I believe we can enjoy paradise responsibly, and I look forward to sharing stories of locals and leaders who are working hard to make tourism both respectful and rewarding for everyone involved.

In many ways, I feel like I'm on a similar path that I walked when I began covering Mexico -- getting off the tourist trail, connecting with locals and, of course, tasting my way through each new experience (bring on the conch and the rum). I want to know the heartbeat of each island, from the traditional crafts and legendary music scenes to the rugged landscapes that draw us all in.

Join me on the journey

The best part? I'm taking you along for the ride. Together we'll explore and uncover chic hideaways, eco-conscious resorts and the laid-back spots where the only thing on the agenda is making sure you've got a front-row seat for the sunset. And while the Caribbean may be known for its sun, sand and sea, I'll be diving deeper to share the stories that surprise and inspire you (and your clients) to hop on the next flight to someplace warm.

So here's to a new adventure -- a little rum, a lot of sun and countless stories I am eager to tell. I'm looking forward to the journey.
