Effective June 4, all future travel vouchers issued by Spirit Airlines will be valid for a year, up from the previous validity period of 90 days.

In addition, Spirit has increased its weight allowance for checked bags to 50 pounds from the previous allowance of 40. That move aligns Spirit with full-service U.S. carriers.

"These enhancements provide each and every one of our guests unparalleled flexibility and peace of mind, and it's just the beginning of our pursuit to make affordable travel easier and more seamless than ever," chief commercial officer Matt Klein said in a statement.

The moves follow Spirit's May 17 announcement that it did away with cancellation and change fees

The carrier, which has reported heavy losses over the past year, is working on increasing its appeal to higher-end flyers

Tuesday's changes, Spirit said, will ultimately be joined by "many new milestones toward an enhanced guest experience with more flexible policies."
